2nd anniversary for LSA in the UK

Yesterday - 5th March 2011 - was the second anniversary of the first Laser Sweat Ablation operation performed in the UK.

The first procedure in the UK which was performed by Mark Whiteley in 2009 was televised and put on the BBC website.

In the following 2 years we have performed about 80 LSA procedures, exploring its use in Bromhidrosis (smelly sweat) as well as Hyperhidrosis (fluid sweat) and improving the results all of the time.

Plans for the forthcoming year include:
  • Release of new data regarding the laser and how it interacts with the skin
  • A new instrument designed by Mark Whiteley to improve the the LSA procedure
  • A new method of investigating and performing LSA to improve our understanding ad control of the operation
Keep an eye on this blog to keep up to date with the latest information on this exciting newish (well 2 years old!!!) procedure.

  2. Hi there,

I was wondering if you already heard about this new method in the US called Miradry. I was wondering what your opinion is about this method and is it something you might consider introducing in the UK ?

  3. Thank you.

It is only one of a couple of solutions we are watching.

However our understanding of this is that it only reduces sweating for a year - similar to Botox.

We are still woringon LSA to improve it further as it seems to be the best chance of a permanent solution to axilary hyperhidrosis.

If any other technology shows a similar promise, we will be trialling it as soon as we can!

  4. Hi Steve,

As you will see from the Blog, we have just mdified the LSA procedure again to ELSA - we are resubmitting the ethics project based on this change.

    Best wishes,

  5. I was quite interested in having LSA done after years of misery from hyperhidrosis and big sweat patches on my underarms constantly and had been saving for it but am quite shocked to see you have risen your fee from around £3K to £3.5K, now making it unaffordable. In todays economic climate I think this is really off doing this when £3K was already very high.

I have spoken to various other sufferers on hyperhidrosis forums who have also been looking for solutions and like me in no way will be able to afford your extremely high price now.
I find it quite sad in todays economic climate where peoples living costs are so high you seem to be taking advantage of those desperate for a solution and with there being so little in terms of solution you charge as much as can.
After doing 80 procedures as you have quoted you would have easily paid off the cost of the machine so the increase of price astounds me.

    Anyway regards
    Maria

  6. Dear Maria,

Many thanks for your comments. Although I see what you mean from a simplistic view, I'm afraid that you don't understand the complexities of developing a new operation.

I am not merely performing a well known operation and therefore "paying off a machine". If you go back and look through this blog fully, you will realise that although the basic procedure came from Argentina (where I learned it) the results were not very good.

I have now spent 2 years improving it - and have performed several research studies which all have to be funded (I do not have money from the NHS or Government as so many doctors do).

This research has cost many tens of thousands of pounds - but has resulted in teh Laser Sweat Ablation being far more successful with far fewer complications.

We will be publishing our research in the future but at the current time, we are the only centre in the world performing Laser Sweat Ablation and the new ELSA.

This means that our suppliers have to make equipment only for us - and so far very few doctors have applied to come to learn the techique.

The price reflects the costs of the equipment, the research to make it more effective and safer, as well as all of the consultations, sweat tests and follow-up - including a re-do if if hasn't worked to a technical failure.

I can assure you that if a commercial company that did not have our research ethic was asked to price this operation with the money it has cost to develop it - and the things that are included in the package price - it would be far more costly!

    Best wishes

  7. Hi,

Can you please share the results of early patients who have done LSA as we all want to know that, Is LSA a permanent solution nad did the experience any side effects

  8. Hi there,

I can only say a limited amount at the moment as our first paper has been submitted for publication and in medicine it is very important not to release information that will stop a research paper being published.

However, it is clear that our modifid approach has reduced the side-effects and complications dramatically over the last 6 - 9 months.

As our research is published we will put our results up here with references.
