LSA in Bromhidrosis - 4th Patient

Today I saw the 4th patient to have LSA for Bromhidrosis.

She has had a very good improvement - better on one side than the other.

Her own assessment of the improvement was 85-90% improvement in smell and sticky sweat on the right side and 50 - 60% on the left.

We are now analysing her results - along with our other patients - to find out why one side was better than the other in order to improve the technique further.

However, as precious little else works for Bromhidrosis, even a 50% improvement can dramatically improve the quality of life for those who suffer from Bromhidrosis.

  1. Hi mark,
Have you had any further information on whether you remove any of the apocrine glands (the ones that cause the smelly sweat)?
As I have read that the apocrine glands only secrete through the hair follicle, is it possible that you are removing some of the hair shafts in the underarm area and this is giving a better result for the Bromhidrosis?

    Thanks, Gemma.

  2. Hi Gemma,
    Thank you for your comment.
There are two bits to answer of your question.
Firstly we are doing some histology test this summer to check exactly what level is removed and what is destroyed by the laser.
Secondly, there is a difference between the hair follicle and the hair shaft. The hair shaft is just the keratin (protein) hair. This is made by a sac of cells - the follicle. The apocrine gland discharges into this follicle - after all the sebuum usually lubricates the outside of the hair (the "natural oils" that cosmetic adverts go on about).
So just removing the shaft does nothing - otherwise we could cure Bromhidrosis by just plucking the hair!!
We need to destroy the follicle and the associated apocrine gland - hence the need to do this from the underside of the dermis (skin).
I hope this makes sense - please write back if you want to know more.
    Best wishes,
    Mark

  3. Hi Mark,
I think I suffer from Bromhidrosis for sometime. I am jobless due to this . I am eager to know the results of LSA-Bromhidrosis. My observation is my right side is worse than left side. My physician did the sweat test and found that I sweat more on the right side than the left side.

I heard that LSA may not be the long lasting solution to this trouble. I would like to know your comments in this.

    Thanks
    Prabu

  4. Hi Prabu,

I am very sorry t hear about your condition.

So many people do not realise how debilitating Bromhidrosis can be.

Our early results look promising to reduce Bromhidrosis - and as very little else has any effect at all, LSA seems to be the best available at the moment.

I would be interested to know where you have heard that LSA may not be the long term solution? In the UK, I am the only doctor who has been to Blugerman for training. I have modified the technique with ourreearch and audit making LSA wha it is today - and it is still evolving.

No doctor has been on my LSA course - so you can be 100% certain no-one else is having LSA. There some doctors who offer procedrues they all similar things, but it would be interesting to know where they were "trained".

There are no figures at all for the long term for LSA in Bromhidrosis - either good or bad! My first LSA for Bromhidrosis was on 15th August 2009 - and as no-one else is trained in the LSA techique, the only commen can be from me and this can only be for less than a year!!!

It will take time to see what the long term results of LSA will be for Bromhidrosis.

  6. Thank you for your request - at the moment we are bound by the UK's credit rules and so can only offer limited pament plans.

However we do have some research projects coming up where we will be asking for volunteers - if this is of interest plese e-mail us on info@thewhiteleyclinic.co.uk.
